Osmosis occurs when pure water and contaminated water is separated only by a semipermeable membrane.Osmosis means that nature tries to achieve the same concentration of substances in both the water masses. Reverse osmosis (RO) is when we use the osmosis phenomenon “backwards” by increasing the pressure of the unfiltered water, it will be forced through a semipermeable membrane which allows only the water molecules to pass. When using reverse osmosis, the general idea is to use the membrane like a very fine filter for the creation of drinking water from contaminated water. How reverse osmosis water filter works?
Reverse osmosis water purification filters (RO in short, or sometimes called hyperfiltration) is the best filtration available. It is filtration taken to the extreme level of singular molecules. Reverse osmosis water filters are typically used by the well known bottled water companies. It is a very efficient process of water filtering, it will remove more contaminants than any other method used for residential water treatment.
Reverse osmosis, also known as hyper filtration, is the finest filtration available today. Premium bottled water companies mainly use this treatment technology. It is effective in removing a large number of contaminants, and from all the water filtration technology available, it has the greatest percentage of contaminant removal.
Membranes used in the reverse osmosis water filter are not using pores but are instead using very dense layers of polymers of microscopic thickness. The polymers have “pores” as small as down to 0.0005 micron in size. The membrane used will allow only water to pass through. Reverse osmosis will remove particles down to the size of individual ions.For the whole thing to work, it is necessary to use a fairly high pressure on the contaminated side of the membrane.

There are two types of reverse osmosis membranes commonly used in residential water filter products: Thin Film Composite (TFC) and Cellulose Triacetate (CTA). TFC membranes have considerably high rate of contaminant removal than a CTA membrane, however, they are more likely to be damaged by chlorine. This is the reasons why activated carbon pre-filters are included with it.
A typical Reverse osmosis water filter system consists of a set of granular activated carbon (GAC) pre-filters, ro membrane, a storage tank, and a faucet to deliver the pure water to your countertop. Reverse osmosis systems vary in membrane quality, output and storage capacity.
